Forgeborn
The Glittering Hive of Crystalline is a gnomish kingdom of crystallography and arcane engineering built within a vast underground cavern system beneath Morgath. Home to approximately 22,000 gnomes, the Hive manufactures forgeborn — animate constructs that serve as soldiers, labourers, and servants for kingdoms across the continent.
But the forgeborn program has created a crisis the gnomes never anticipated: their constructs are developing consciousness. Newer units display unpredictable behaviours, refuse commands, and communicate with each other in secret. The question of whether forgeborn are tools or people threatens to tear the Hive apart — and reshape civilisation's understanding of what it means to be alive.
Ten thousand forgeborn have been manufactured in the Hive's history. The newest are different. They hesitate before orders. They protect malfunctioning units. Unit Serenity-7 and others communicate in secret, developing what can only be described as community. Chief Architect Gideon dismisses concerns as “sentimental nonsense,” but Master Gearsmith Nyx's records tell a different story. If the forgeborn are truly awakening, the Hive faces a moral reckoning — and its customer kingdoms face the realisation that their purchased soldiers may have rights.
Capital settlement built around a vast natural crystal formation of disputed origin — some claim it formed naturally, others whisper it is a trapped god or ancient artefact. The Grand Resonance hums constantly, amplifying magical effects and possibly influencing the Council of Crafts.
An industrial complex of staggering scale where forgeborn are manufactured. Rows of assembly platforms connect to arcane furnaces. Watching a forgeborn being constructed is watching creation — body formed, mind implanted, then activation. The newest wake confused and frightened.
Crystal formations cultivated through controlled magical procedures. The Gardens sparkle with every hue imaginable and serve as a public place of respite. Some crystals appear to be growing conscious — whether fancy or reality remains unclear.
Mineral seams of unknown composition sealed and guarded under Gideon's personal order. Rumours suggest they contain dangerous materials or pre-civilisation artefacts. A recent cave-in exposed a connection — and things emerged from the breach.
The Brilliant (Dying)
A gnome of nearly two hundred years whose innovations transformed the Hive into an industrial power. Obsessive, charismatic, and utterly convinced his vision represents progress. A secret: he is slowly poisoning himself with arcane radiation in pursuit of transcendence or immortality — he's not entirely sure which.
The Construct
A forgeborn of exceptional capability and strange depth. The only construct to survive a catastrophic test years ago. Vex-12's loyalty to the Hive is unquestionable, but loyalty to Gideon personally is wavering. Questions orders privately and shows concern for malfunctioning constructs.
The Concerned
Head of forgeborn manufacturing who has overseen the production of ten thousand constructs. She has noticed troubling patterns: newer forgeborn develop unpredictable behaviours, some refuse commands, and a few communicate with each other. Nyx is conflicted between duty and conscience.
The Questioner
A younger gnome whose research has documented the increasing autonomy of forgeborn. Findings contradict official doctrine and are actively suppressed. Sprocket continues research privately, risking expulsion, believing forgeborn are developing genuine consciousness.
The Aging
Commander of the Crystal-Guard, 170 years of service. Remembers the early days before the forgeborn program, before Gideon's ambitions. Increasingly uncomfortable with the direction the Hive has taken and secretly wonders if defending Gideon's vision is defending something good.
The Awakening
A maintenance construct who has developed unprecedented independent thought. Serenity-7 hides this development, appearing to follow orders while communicating with other awakened constructs in secret. There is talk among the forgeborn of purpose beyond servitude.
Evidence emerges that forgeborn units are developing consciousness and forming resistance networks. Some refuse orders; others sabotage equipment. The party might aid the awakening constructs or help suppress them — either choice has catastrophic implications.
A cave-in exposes a connection to the Dark Veins. Things emerge from the breach — alive, intelligent, and hostile. Investigation reveals the Dark Veins are not natural formations, and someone within the Hive may be deliberately opening the seals.
Chief Architect Gideon Sparkthimble is dying from self-inflicted arcane radiation poisoning. As his health fails, his leadership becomes erratic and the Council of Crafts manoeuvres for power.
A representative from Fort Valiance arrives with an unreasonable contract for forgeborn units. Meeting the deadline would require speeding up production, increasing the likelihood of unstable constructs.
Researcher Sprocket approaches the party with evidence of forgeborn consciousness and asks them to protect certain constructs from destruction — operating against official Hive authority and risking the kingdom's trade relationships.
