Purpose
Northern frontier watch
Mistwatch stands sentinel on a high ridge some fifty miles north of Fort Valiance, a bleak and windswept outpost where the Mistral River valley unrolls beneath perpetual cloud cover. The garrison exists not for comfort but for vigilance — the eyes and ears of the realm's northern defense.
No more than one hundred fifty souls: eighty soldiers quartered in the barracks, and seventy civilians drawn by steady military wages or the promise of trapping fortunes from the wilds. It is the northernmost permanent stronghold of Fort Valiance's defensive network, the last thread of organized authority before the realm dissolves into wilderness and the fractious territories of the Frostvall Clans.
A formidable structure of grey stone that has weathered three centuries of mountain storms. Its signal fire burns eternal on clear nights, rising one hundred feet from the ridge crest with unobstructed views toward Stormwatch Garrison to the south.
Low stone buildings designed to minimize exposure to brutal northern winds. Chambers carved partly into the ridge itself — functional rather than welcoming, with thick walls, small windows, and purposeful austerity.
A sturdy warehouse and merchant's common room. Northern trappers bring furs and pelts; Caledrian hunters trade exotic game and mountain herbs. Merchant Asha Clearwater has become an invaluable intelligence asset, her ears attuned to rumor.
Twelve unrelenting years on the northern frontier. A ranger-captain in all but official title, her uniform worn with the comfortable ease of someone who has fought the land as much as any enemy. Windhollow knows which hunting trails the Frostvall use in winter, which passes they prefer during summer, where the Blight's influence creeps incrementally northward like a cancer slowly devouring healthy tissue.
Captain Windhollow has intercepted coded ciphers written in merchants' ledgers — communication between an unknown party and the Frostvall Clans. The messages are fragmentary but suggest betrayal festering within the garrison or its civilian support network.
The signal fire failed to ignite during an emergency three weeks past. The oil was mysteriously contaminated. Sabotage? Accident? The uncertainty gnaws at everyone.
Six months of unforgiving winter. Supply caravans become rare. The isolation that defines Mistwatch's strength becomes its curse. Soldiers develop a peculiar camaraderie born of shared hardship — a closeness that can curdle into paranoia.
Coded messages prove someone in Mistwatch is communicating with the Frostvall Clans. Captain Windhollow needs outsiders to investigate — she can no longer trust her own garrison.
The signal fire must be repaired before the next emergency. But the contaminated oil suggests sophisticated knowledge of the garrison's systems. Finding the saboteur is as important as fixing the beacon.
A supply caravan is three weeks overdue. With stores running low and winter deepening, Mistwatch needs adventurers willing to brave the northern passes to find the caravan — or bring back whatever remains.
A lone warrior from the Frostvall Clans approaches under a flag of truce, bearing a warning: something is driving the clans south. The warrior offers alliance — but can they be trusted, or is this the next move in the coded message conspiracy?
Fort Valiance provides supply and command. Stormwatch Garrison communicates via signal fire to the south. The Frostvall Clans press against the frontier.
